Quartz vs. Quartzite
People are often unsure of the differences between quartz and quartzite—and that’s fair. You can’t spell quartzite without quartz, so most would assume they’re practically the same. But in the world of countertops, they’re actually very different. Many already know the differences between quartz and granite, but the bigger question often remains: What is the difference between quartz and quartzite? With the demand for quartz growing, it’s especially important to be able to distinguish between the two.
What is Quartz?
Quartz is a mineral that is naturally abundant, but when it comes to countertops, it is transformed into what’s called an engineered stone. Crushed quartz crystals are combined with resin and pigments, creating slabs that are about 90% quartz and 10% binding materials.
This is where much of the confusion arises—people hear that quartz countertops are made of natural quartz, which is true, but the final product is not a slab of pure stone. Instead, it’s engineered for durability, consistency, and design flexibility.

What is Quartzite?
Quartzite, on the other hand, is 100% natural stone. It forms when sandstone (composed mainly of quartz grains) undergoes intense heat and pressure deep within the Earth’s crust. This process fuses the grains together, creating a much denser and harder rock with unique characteristics.
Quartzite often contains other minerals, which give it striking variations and movement in appearance. This makes it visually similar to marble but with superior strength and less fragility.
Appearance
Quartzite typically comes in lighter shades and can mimic the elegant look of marble, with each slab being truly one-of-a-kind. Its natural veining and depth cannot be exactly replicated.
Quartz, being engineered, offers virtually unlimited color and design options. Manufacturers can create slabs that resemble marble, granite, or entirely unique looks. Today’s technology has made it so convincing that it often takes a trained eye to distinguish engineered quartz from natural quartzite.
Durability

Quartzite: Extremely resistant to scratching and heat, but because it’s porous, it must be sealed properly and resealed periodically to avoid staining.

Quartz: Highly resistant to scratches and moderately resistant to heat. Unlike quartzite, quartz is non-porous, so it does not require sealing and is easier to maintain. 
Hardness & Heat Resistance
Quartzite is harder than quartz—on the Mohs scale, it’s one of the hardest countertop materials available, second only to diamond. Quartz is slightly softer but more flexible, making it less likely to chip or crack during use.

When it comes to heat, quartzite can naturally withstand higher temperatures since it was formed under extreme conditions in the Earth. Quartz can tolerate heat in everyday use but is more vulnerable to damage from direct exposure to very hot items due to the resins in its makeup.
Maintenance & Cleaning

Quartzite: Needs to be sealed every 1–3 years. A simple water test can help determine when resealing is necessary: if water darkens the stone, it’s time to reseal. Cleaning should be done with mild soap and water; harsh cleaners, especially acidic ones like vinegar, can etch or damage the stone. Specialized stone cleaners are recommended when deeper cleaning is required.

Quartz: Requires no sealing. Maintenance is minimal, and cleaning is straightforward with soap and water. 
Lifespan
​Both quartz and quartzite countertops can last for decades. Quartzite, being a natural stone, has the edge in long-term durability and is less likely to discolor over time. Quartz, while extremely durable, may gradually show some color changes in its resin components after many years of use.

The choice between quartz and quartzite depends on lifestyle, budget, and design goals:
